Firms in North West create employment boost

A newly published report shows that small and medium sized companies based in the North West made a major contribution to reducing unemployment levels last year.

The report from BDO found that medium-sized firms in North West areas like Merseyside and Greater Manchester created new job opportunities for over 50,000 people during 2018. Furthermore, small firms within the region also made a significant contribution to cutting unemployment, creating 13,271 new jobs – which is an increase of 9% on the total for the previous year.

According to the report, medium sized firms in this region provided more job openings during 2018 than companies on the FTSE 350, even though the report also argues that the Government is not supporting them enough. The total number of new jobs created by these firms was 51,376, which is a rise of 7%.

Ed Dwan from BDO told Liverpool Business News:

“North West businesses continue to perform well, experiencing strong employment and turnover growth. While small businesses in the region are thriving – reporting a 9 percent increase in job creation – mid-market companies continue to power the regional economy.”

However, this report also states that such firms are not being given enough backing by the government and recommends measures such as closing the skills gap in the UK, setting up sector and regional powerhouses, and making the tax system easier to navigate. North West firms do have accountants in the Wirral and other local areas that can help them with tax issues.
